Your Home Away From Home Hey guys, Due to a lot of race related events that have been going on here at the University of Illinois  campus, as well as several other college campuses across the nation in the last few months, I thought itd be appropriate to touch on this subject briefly. When you are here at Illinois, in whatever capacity that may beâ€"whether it is as a student, teacher, or deanâ€"Illinois  is your home. Not only is Illinois  your home, but the people around you are your family. You may not know them all and you may not always get along with them all, but when you come to this amazing institution, you should feel welcome and safe, just like you would at your home. I am not here to pick sides or to inform you of injustices. This is me letting incoming Illinois students know that if you come here, you are my brothers and sisters on this campus, and that you should never feel afraid to attend your classes or feel threatened by another student. No university is perfect, but the student leaders and administration here on campus have taken steps to understand one another and come to a conclusion that will make all parties feel that progress has been made. We all want the same thingsâ€"to be able to attend an amazing university, get a quality education, and build great memories while doing soâ€"and I believe Illinois  has made steps so that those goals are not deterred from for any person attending the university. In order to manage the quality of food being sent to each store, Rich built a commissary where all food was delivered and inspected, then driven out to each store location. This has its down sides, like only being able to supply locations within a day’s drive, but according to Rich that will help maintain quality (Pg. C-37). It guarantees the freshness of the food and ultimately customer satisfaction. In N Out has achieved success by maintaining a simple motto, â€Å"Give customers the freshest, highest quality foods you can buy and provide them with friendly service in a sparkling clean environment† (Pg. C-36). Even after growing to over 250 locations, In N Out has not compromised quality. In addition to providing high quality food, In N Out believes in taking care of its employees by training and paying them well. â€Å"Store managers at In-N-Out make at least $100,000 a year and are eligible for mo nthly bonuses tied to store sales† (Business Week). Radio Programming Radio Programming: Both and Art and a Science Ideally, radio programming should be more of an art than a science. It should be about what people want to hear and what the disc jockeys want to play. Station managers should strive to create quality programs, similar to like they did in the old days, before television was around. Radio is used much differently today than it was in the past. When it was first invented, families used to gather around the radio and listen to programs, similar to how families today watch television programs. Most of the programs on the radio did not feature music, like most do today. Today, radio is mostly turned on to hear news and news information. Personally, I only listen to radio in my car and I have to change the channel frequently because of all the commercials that are played. With the digital revolution and the invention of compact discs and mp3's that are played on the computer, people have less of a use for radio. They can control the songs they hear by playing in a CD player or on their computer. This is personally what I prefer to do. These days it seems like radio programming is more of a science than an art. Program managers find out what a select group of people like, and most of the time it is not very accurate. The way that radio stations get feedback is not very accurate or well-done. They then buy blocks and strips of programming and try to make as much money as they can. They do not play necessarily what the listeners like, but the same songs over and over again day after day. Disc jockeys are tightly controlled and have certain things they are and aren't allowed to do. Promotions and contests are done all the time to try and draw in listeners and add to the listener base. If a station does not like the demographic they are reaching, they will forget about their listeners and change their format to make more money. It's sad to say, but the bottom line these days in the radio business is money. It's not like the old days in which radio was original and unpredictable. These days, it's become a science in which it is manufactured in some remote studio with a high-tech computer system and then sold to the anyone who is willing to pay money for it. Multi-million dollar companies own many stations across the United State and bring in a lot of money each year. Rear Window essays Watching movies is what I do best, but all this time I have never watched anything so thrilling, tense and amazingly significant as an Alfred Hitchcock movie. His greatest film..."Rear Window" is probably Alfred Hitchcocks most perfectly constructed film. It takes place during four days, from Wednesday to Saturday, and the events are filmed from the window of one apartment and mostly through the eyes of one person - the magazine photographer L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart), confined to a wheelchair with his leg in plaster. One of my goals is to describe to you what I understood and loved about this movie, because Sometimes you see or hear things that make a huge impact to where you think about it hours after it's over. This is the case with Rear Window. What is it that makes Rear Window such a great movie? Let me count the ways. First of all, is the obvious. Rear Window is by the greatest director who ever lived Alfred Hitchcock. He was a master of suspense without using profanity, gore, nudity, or even graphic violence. He scared us with only a camera and some lights. The suspense in the film is based on the unquestionable logic of terror. The terror is not in the scene projected on the screen, but in the minds of the audience. Hitchcock slowly awakens in the audience a stream of suspense, which he dams until the final cataractous release. Hitchcock planned his film so accurately that after it had been edited, only a few dozen meters of film remained on the cutting room floor. This shows how amazing he was in directing, and how well the editor did his job. He shows the murderer creeping up the stairs to Jeffs flat leaving the unfamiliar rear of the building into the audiences imagination and it is just the unfamiliar rear that maximizes the threat: at this stage the threat is not just the rather pathetic M r. Thorwald, but the complex unfamiliarity of the building itself. As for the knowledge of the door...
